With WebRTC, customer interactions that start on the Web will be able to stay on the Web, giving users a simple path to fulfilling any number of service needs when connecting with a company. For instance, when Customer Service Representatives (CSRs) are interfacing with customers via WebRTC, interactions are driven from an HTTP/application/browser data path. Therefore, additional context about each customer will be available. This, in turn, will arm CSRs with business intelligence, so they can immediately understand why customers are calling and how to address their needs. This efficiency can drive productivity and increase customer satisfaction.

So, the promise of WebRTC is huge, but companies understand they cannot go public with new technology solutions that may have poor voice quality or drop an important customer's connection. Paying off the promise of WebRTC starts with getting a thorough, user-side view of voice, video and data quality and other performance metrics for both the WebRTC-enabled application and the UC/contact center environment as a whole.

In his session at the WebRTC Fundamentals Summit, Jason Miller, Product Marketing Manager, Service Assurance at Empirix, will walk participants through methodologies and best practices organizations should adopt in order to ensure they can implement an effective testing regime that can realistically simulate the WebRTC-enabled infrastructure, usage loads and the resulting end-user experience to pinpoint potential weak links in the real time communications chain.

Speaker Bio
With more than 13 years of experience in the network and communications industry, Jason Miller serves as product marketing manager, Service Assurance, at Empirix. A seasoned telecommunications engineer with a proven track record in advancing network services, he focuses on increasing productivity and lowering maintenance requirements. Prior to Empirix, Miller served as lab manager and subject matter expert for evolved packet core (EPC) and IP-multimedia subsystem (IMS) at Verizon Wireless, where he led design and development efforts for its Rich Communications Services Lab.

Throughout his career, Miller has become proficient in a wide range of key areas of networking and communications design, integration, implementation, and service delivery. His specialties include next generation network services, 4G LTE, 3GPP IMS, EPC, OMA instant messaging and presence service (IMPS), rich communications architecture and design solutions, and session-based communications.

Interoperable WebRTC and Why It Is Important

There are many potential applications for WebRTC and for many interoperability is not a requirement. However, this does not mean that there is not a need for interoperability, particularly at the signaling level, for other applications.

Many people have dismissed interoperability as a consideration when using WebRTC - often due to the fact that their favoured use-cases do not require it (and in some cases are even hampered by it). In his session at 2nd WebRTC Summit, Peter Dunkley, Technical Director, at Crocodile RCS, will look at the other side and discuss the case for interoperability and explain how WebRTC can be used to enhance and extend existing services in a way provides benefits to service providers and their customers.

He will conclude with a look at some of the open-source options available today for building interoperable WebRTC applications. [continued]

Speaker Bio: Peter Dunkley is Technical Director at Acision. He graduated from The University of Edinburgh in 2000 with a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science. After graduation Peter worked on a PSTN switch developing signalling stacks for SS7, ISDN and similar protocols and creating advanced routing and service applications. Since 2005 he has worked mainly with SIP first leading a team developing a PSTN gateway and then managing the development of a SIP Application Server. Peter joined Crocodile RCS in September 2010 and has made numerous contributions to the Kamailio open source SIP Router project (particularly in the areas of presence, WebSocket, MSRP, and SIP Outbound) since then. Peter is one of the authors of the MSRP over WebSocket draft (draft-pd-dispatch-msrp-websocket) and is a contributor to several open-source projects. [continued]

WebRTC and the Customer Experience

He has more than 20 years of experience designing and developing large-scale customer service solutions and CRM systems. He is an expert on the benefits of cloud computing technology for both enterprise and SMBs and was named to ExecRank's "Top CTO Rankings" list for 2012.

Prior to LiveOps, McFarlane worked for an on-premise contact center provider that is currently ranked number two among the top contact centers worldwide. He also realized that a software and hardware laden provider, such as his previous employer, would be challenged to move quickly into the cloud space. How the Norwegian Red Cross built a video tutoring solution with WebRTC

Visualizing WebRTC: A Social Experiment with Meta-Networking

On her social media platform Melodramatic.com, with global reach and over 1,000 uniques daily, Sara Robertson released a WebRTC network that created a peer-to-peer connection between every visitor on every page load. Geographical location data and round-trip data transfer rates of each connection is collected, and augmented with known demographics about the visitors. Static assets are randomly selected for serving directly through this new meta-network, and user experience is carefully measured. WebRTC – The SKYPE Killer and Cloud UC Enabler

IT systems will need to adapt, and evolving — or simply adding on to the existing relational database management system architecture — isn’t going to cut it. Internet of Things is the current hip phrase of technology evangelists, geeks and all kinds of clairvoyants. If, according to tech blogs and websites, 2013 was the year of big data, then 2014 certainly is the year of Internet of Things. New projects, big funding rounds, the general hype and excitement are everywhere. And yet, we don’t really get the whole thing right. The general media seem more concerned with new smart thermostats design than how the concept of IoT is changing our lives. It’s time to approach this massive subject properly and start avoiding common misconceptions. The problem with Internet of Things is that everyone seems concerned only about the Things, maybe because the name, which kind of implies that.
For many of us old enough to remember, the early days of life online had little to do with the internet. Before we browsed the open web, we dialed into Prodigy or CompuServe or AOL with a 1400-baud telephone modem. Once connected to a particular service, we used its proprietary software to play inside its members-only club, and we couldn’t visit any other service. We lacked a certain amount of freedom. One of my earliest cyber-memories: getting my mom’s AOL account suspended by the moderator of a chat room I was trolling. By today’s standards, such a tightly controlled experience seems quaint—and pretty silly. But that early-’90s scenario could very well repeat itself today, with the so-called Internet of Things.

As a lifelong word junkie, I can honestly say that I’ve never seen more debate, argument, and failure to reach an agreed upon definition of a word than we’re seeing over the word “DevOps.” And while it can be frustrating to find a definition that works for you, and not be swayed by the next essay or cute video that gives a new interpretation—for nerds like me, the ever-changing, wildly different beliefs of DevOps’ meaning, and even its origin are an absolute blast to pour over.
I love The Internet of Things. You do, too, even if you don’t know exactly what it is yet. Hardly a day goes by where I don’t find a story about some awesome company creating some new awesome gadget that taps into The Internet of Things. Scrolling through these stories is like taking a peek at the world (and our homes!) three to five years down the line. But, uh, what exactly is The Internet of Things? And why should you care?
So far, 2014 has turned into a banner year for CIOs that have invested the time and effort to plan for hybrid cloud services, while building strong strategic relationships with their Line of Business leadership. Their approved capital investment budget spend is on-track and operational expenses are contained, as planned. Savvy senior executives across the globe continue to make selective investments in new business technology. In fact, there could be a moderate IT infrastructure spend over the next 12-18 months, which will likely increase the demand for open source software and professional services as new cloud service projects are approved. Worldwide IT spending is now forecast to increase by 4.5 percent in 2014 at constant currency, that's according to updated projections from the latest market study by International Data Corporation (IDC). By and large, this enterprise growth is still being driven by smartphones, apps and the mobile cloud.
It is only fitting that the 20th anniversary of the Gartner Hype Cycle has the Internet of Things right at the top of the coaster. IoT is currently at the peak of Inflated Expectations. The Gartner Hype Cycle give organizations an assessment of the maturity, business benefit and future direction of more than 2,000 technologies. The theme for this year’s Emerging Technologies Hype Cycle is Digital Business.
Inarguably, the pressure is on "the network" to get in gear, so to speak, and address how fast its services can be up and running. Software-defined architectures like cloud and SDN have arisen in response to this pressure, attempting to provide the means by which critical network services can be provisioned in hours instead of days. Much of the blame for the time it takes to provision network services winds up landed squarely on the fact that much of the network is comprised of hardware. Not just any hardware, mind you, but special hardware. Such devices take time to procure, time to unbox, time to rack and time to cable. It's a manually intensive process that, when not anticipated, can take weeks to acquire and get into place.
Back when we were doing DB2 at IBM, there was an important older product called IMS which brought significant revenue. With another database product coming (based on relational technology), IBM did not want any cannibalization of the existing revenue stream. Hence we coined the phrase “dual database strategy” to justify the need for both DBMS products. In a similar vain, several vendors are concocting all kinds of terms and strategies to justify newer products under the banner of Big Data.

What if you could deploy a new IT service shortly after you defined the requirements? And, just imagine the bliss, if your IT spend could directly translate into a competitive advantage. Predicting the ROI would be relatively easy. You would be the envy of your peer group. Unfortunately, as most senior executives already know, it's never that simple. Typically, you perform the technology assessment due diligence up-front, you place your bets based upon the most compelling guidance, and then you closely monitor the results. It's an iterative process, where confidence builds over time. Maybe that's why new business technology spending tends to be aligned with a past success. But this procurement model doesn't adapt very well in response to unanticipated significant market events or the rapid acceleration of unplanned technology migrations. Moreover, tight budgets and other resource constraints can severely limit an organization's ability to react quickly to changing environments.
